Generally we use APA format for research citations, though other discipllines may require MLA, Chicago, or other formats.

Resource for APA formatting here: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/08/

Basic Format for Books:

Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Location: Publisher.

So, the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition of the Players Handbook would look like this:

Gygax, E. G. (1978). Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook. Lake Geneva, WI: TSR.

For the 6th printing (blue cover, wizard in white figthing flying creatures):

Gygax, E. G. (1980). Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook. Lake Geneva, WI: TSR. (Original work published 1978)
